Case studies

Recognising and encouraging the broader and practical application of knowledge, AfriCHI 2025, presents the Case Studies track. The Track provides a unique opportunity for the submission of accounts detailing the practical application of African knowledge and wisdom in design and HCI in non-academic settings such as industry, community, and public sectors, etc. This includes scenarios, examples, projects, and activities in non-academic settings that extend, and apply knowledge, bridging theory and practice beyond the bounds of academia.

Going by the conference theme, "Re-centering African Wisdom in HCI", the Track recognises that knowledge is represented and embodied, and more specifically applied, in different ways. Therefore, it seeks to extend and showcase tacit, traditional, and newer forms of knowledge application. As such, it encourages submissions that represent and embody knowledge in African, Global North, and related contexts in non-academic settings that may not be recognised in mainstream academia.

Topics of Interest

Submissions are welcome on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Design and technology projects - pilot or related cases that demonstrate the application of design and technology in existing and emerging areas such as AI, VR, digital economy, cybersecurity, fintech, etc
  • Design and technology innovations – new technologies and design approaches in a broad range of domains representing and providing local African solutions
  • Community-based initiatives - community-driven activities that represent and explore community-based solutions and innovations
  • Design artifacts - objects or items that extend and inspire African design, offering new and unique design insight
  • Practical design applications or processes - applications that extend and represent African technology interactions and design
